How Did CROWN CUES Get Started?

Gene's wife, Renee', wanted a bright, yellow pool cue.  They couldn't find one anywhere.  After looking online and everwhere they went, Renee' decided to buy a cheap cue at the discount store, sand it down and paint it.  (Back then, Renee' didn't like wood grain on her pool cues.)  So, Renee' wound up with a beautiful, yellow pool cue with NO wood grain.
Well, Gene didn't stop there.  He started whittling wood to make joint protectors.  He later decided he'd like to build cues as a hobby or even a profession.  So, a year later, after much studying of available materials on cuemaking, Gene bought a cue lathe and some exotic woods.  And, the rest is history!

By the way, Renee' keeps her old, yellow pool cue as a reminder of what caused Gene to start making pool cues, although she is okay with wood grain showing on her pool cue, now.  In fact, she has a beautiful cue made of Canarywood and Bubinga and another sharp-looking cue of Bubinga and Curly Maple.  Of course, both cues were made by Gene!

CROWN CUES has been around since 2003, although the name wasn't decided on until sometime in 2004.

Gene has about 9 years of experience as a machinist and about 7 years as a tool and die maker, giving him quite a bit of experience with the equipment needed for cuemaking.

Crown Cues started out in an 8'x10' metal shed and has graduated to a 600+ sq. ft. workshop.

Currently, Gene still has a regular day job working around the same type of equipment, but when he's not at work, he's either playing with his granddaughter or building cues.
